The Sustainable Environment Research Centre has developed a range of Biomass Activity Monitors (BAM) to determine the aerobic bacterial activity in various media including soils and sludges. The latest development, funded by KEF as part of the PPOC scheme, has been the AquaBAM which measures biomass activity in water or fluids. Advantages over traditional methods of biomass monitoring (e.g. plate counts) are that assays are rapid, data can be recovered in real time, and the equipment is portable and so can be taken to site or installed into process lines. It is anticipated that instruments can be used to monitor the performance of aerobic waste water treatment plants, measure overall biological contaminants in food and process lines and provide data in the remediation of contaminated land and groundwater, or overall condition and fertility of agricultural soils.
